Paint manufacturer Tikkurila has adopted an open-minded and proactive approach to developing their IT services. The company has, over a very short time frame, taken considerable steps towards digitalizing their operations. Increasingly this has been done with the help of Microsoft’s cloud services. The introduction of automated self-service processes for identity and mobile device management has opened new possibilities for mobile work and enabled safe use of a broader range of mobile devices.

Situation

Tikkurila is one of the leading European paint manufacturers and marketers for consumers and professionals. Established in 1862, the company has long industrial traditions. Today Tikkurila employs more than 2600 people in several countries and is far from traditional in the way the company operates and how they approach their IT infrastructure development. Their proactive mindset was what got Tikkurila looking for solutions to data security and compliance issues. The goal was to make processes more efficient, enable new ways of working and improve productivity.

Data security issues have become a growing concern with the increasing use of mobile equipment and solutions. To ensure data security and be able to answer the demands for fast and flexible service, a more controlled and automated identity management process that would replace the old labor-intensive system based on manual updates was needed. This was also seen as a way for the company to enable access to new cloud-based tools.

Solution

Microsoft IDM solution was the logical solution for Tikkurila, as the company’s IT architecture was already Microsoft based. The solution was found to match the requirements Tikkurila had, was compatible with the rest of the company’s systems, and was easy to deploy, so Microsoft partner Pulsen Integration Oy was contracted for the project. Later, in the second phase included Pulsen´s Smart identity portal.

Results

Automating manual processes brings direct cost and time savings. The latter is especially important these days, as the amount of services keeps growing and the pace of business in an online environment does not allow waiting for access rights to be manually issued. A centralized and automated way of operating is more efficient, safer, and helps ensure compliance. Automated routines free IT resources for other things and make password management smoother and more controlled.

With the ability to quickly deploy new SaaS and cloud solutions safely and cost-efficiently, Tikkurila is now better equipped to succeed in the growing competition. Thanks to the self-service processes and data security, mobile workers can now find easier ways to remotely connect to the company’s critical services and data also outside normal office hours.
